The
highlights of your morning city tour include the San Benito
Monastery, the Central Bank of Brazil and the Museum of Art,
ending with a ride to the Peak of Sugar Loaf Mountain. Drive
along Guanabara Bay to the beach at Praia Vermelha, where you
board a cable car for a three-minute ride to Morro da Urca, a
lower hill with its own restaurant and amphitheater. A second
cable car then brings you to the very top of Sugar Loaf, 1,300
feet above sea level, where lookout points offer a spectacular
panorama of Guanabara Bay, the wide sandy beaches for which
Rio is famous, and the sprawling city itself. After your
descent, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before returning to
your hotel.

RIO DE
JANEIRO |
|
|
Today you
explore Petropolis, approximately 40 miles from Rio, a
European-style mountain resort, which was once a summer
retreat for the 19th Century Imperial Court. This
is a charming city with elegant parks and stately homes,
cobblestone streets and horse-drawn carriages. Your tour
includes visits to the Municipal Cathedral and the impeccably
appointed Palace of Dom Pedro II, now the Imperial Museum.
This modest but elegant building seems a faithful
representation of what we know of Pedro II’s character.
Housing the Crown Jewels and other imperial possessions, it is
so beautifully kept that one might think that the imperial
family left the day before one’s visit, rather than in 1889.
After lunch there is time to wander the city’s parks and
squares with their canals and old fashioned street lamps,
before you return to Rio later this afternoon.

This
afternoon you will be picked up at your hotel for your
excursion to Tijuca Forest. Drive through residential areas
this morning to Cosmo Velho, where you board the funicular
railway for a 20-minute ride through Tijuca, billed as the
world’s largest urban forest. As the train climbs Corcovado
(“Hunchback”) Mountain, enjoy spectacular views of Rio peeking
through the dense vegetation. Crowning Corcovado at 2,400 feet
above sea level is the majestic statue of Christ the Redeemer.
Standing 120 feet high, the statue’s outstretched arms welcome
you to a breathtaking panorama, unmatched for its spellbinding
magic! Begin your descent and return to your hotel.
