|
This morning your sightseeing begins with a tour of Beirut,
once dubbed "the Paris of the Middle East". Enjoy many favorites
sights, including the National Museum and the Corniche, a scenic
coastal road lined with shops and restaurants; you also view the
famous Pigeon's Rock. Leaving the city, continue to the Nahr al-Kalb
(or "Dog River") to see mountainside carvings left by conquering armies
from as early as 1200 BC. Your next stop is the Jeita Grotto, a series
of caves famous for their 7,000-year-old rock formations. Arrive in
Byblos in time for lunch, followed by a sightseeing tour of one
of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world, before returning
to Beirut for the night.

DAY 03 |
BEIRUT / BCHARRE / TRIPOLI / BEIRUT
|
|
|
After breakfast you drive north through some of Lebanon's
most beautiful scenery toward the Cedars of Bcharre, the last
remaining grove of biblical cedars (some more than 1500 years old)
in the country. The small Christian village of Bcharre itself is built
into the mountainside; its main claim to fame is as the birthplace of
19th century author Khalil Gibran. After lunch in Bcharre, continue
on to Tripoli, Lebanon's "second city", to visit the St. Gilles Citadel,
built by a Frankish Crusader; to see the magnificent 14th century
Taynal Mosque; and to browse for bargains in the colorful "souk".

DAY 04 |
BEIRUT / DEIR AL - QUAMAR / SIDON / BEIRUT

rivers and waterfalls. After a visit to the village of Deir El Qamar,
dating from medieval times, travel on to the Beitieddine Palace,
a magnificent example of Lebanese architecture complete with
a huge courtyard, central fountain and ornate arcades. Now a museum,
the Palace houses a unique exhibition of Byzantine mosaic floors in its
former stables. After lunch at the Mir Amin Palace, drive further south to
seaside Saida to visit a 12th century sea castle and shop in the souk before

DAY 05 |
BEIRUT / BEKAA VALLEY / BEIRUT
|
|
|
The fertile Bekaa Valley contains one of Lebanon's great mysteries;
the city of Aanjar, built by Syrian Umayyads in the 7th and 8th centuries.
Why it was built here, and what happened to its people, no one knows.
First uncovered in the 1950s, excavations were halted during the war,
but buildings like the Calife's residence and the mosque convey the classical
flavor of the place. Then it is on to the fabled winery of Ksara, for a tasting
and a visit to the storage caves. After lunch in the town of Zahle, known
for its traditional "mezze" dishes, proceed to Baalbeck, to see the Roman temples
of Jupiter, Bacchus and Venus.
