DAY 02:
DAMASCUS |
|
|
Enjoy
Damascus’s city tour, which claims to be the oldest
continuously inhabited city in the world. After visiting the
peaceful Omayad Mosque, the black-and-white Azem Palace, the
National Museum, St. Paul's Chapel (the disciples lowered St.
Paul, in flight from the Jews, from one of its windows in a
basket) and the Chapel of St. Anania, the afternoon is free to
shop in the Damascine "souks" or to relax.

DAMASCUS / ALEPPO |
|
|
After
breakfast you drive north to Maaloula, whose people still
speak Aramic, the language of Christ, en route to magnificent
Krak des Chevaliers (the Castle of the Knights). This great
Crusaders' fortress still looks much as it did 800 years ago,
when it was garrisoned by as many as 4,000 Europeans. After
lunch, you continue north to Sarjella, one of the region's 500
"dead cities" which appeared in the 4th Century and were
deserted, for reasons unknown, in the 9th. You arrive in
Aleppo this evening.

ALEPPO |
|
|
Aleppo has a long history as a trading center between Asia and the
Mediterranean. Today's tour shows you the Islamic Citadel,
the Armenian Quarter and St. Simeon Cathedral, the largest
Christian building in the Middle East when it was built in the
4th Century.

After
breakfast you visit Apamea, a Hellenistic city with one
thousand columns, and stop for lunch at Hama, whose gigantic
wooden waterwheels are turned by the Orontes River. You reach
Palmyra, once a Greco-Roman outpost of great renown, in time
to watch the sunset from an Arabian castle. Your hotel is
built on an archaeological site overlooking ancient ruins.
