|
|
This morning
you will be driven to Marangu gate. After registration at
Marangu gate start your climb to Mandara hut. The hike takes
about three to four hours and it is through the forest
vegetation. Enjoy the flora and fauna along the trail. The
altitude gain is about 2,854 feet.

HOROMBO / KIBO |
|
|
On this day
the vegetation begins to thin out. You pass the “Last Water”
and the landscape becomes more barren as you reach the saddle
(a wide desert between Kibo and Mawenzi Peak). Most people
begin to feel the effects of the altitude. With the
wind-chill factor it can be very cold. The altitude gain is
3,225 feet.

KIBO /
GILLMAN’S POINT / UHURU PEAK / HOROMBO |
|
|
Your guide
wakes you up at around 1:00 a.m. so you can reach the summit
by sunrise. The sun melts the frozen scree, making the ascent
all the more difficult. The ascent to Gillman’s point is very
steep (grueling four to five hours up the scree). The climb
from Gillman’s point to Uhuru Peak (summit) is fairly gradual
and the altitude gain is about 705 feet. It will take another
hour to hour and a half. The summit is well marked and there
is a book where you can sign your name.
Shortly
after sunrise begin the long walk down the mountain to Kibo
hut for a short rest, and then continue on to Horombo, where
you will spend the night.
