Peru is home to what is considered by many to be the finest archaeological site on the continent, Machu Picchu. It is Peru where the Inca Empire flourished over 600 years ago. Also, it was Peru where pre-Columbian inhabitants of the coastal desert near Nazca, drew fantastic geoglyphs and geometric shapes on the desert floor without any reason.
Other key areas include: Cusco; Sacred Valley; Pisac market and so on. Other important sites include Chan Chan (the biggest adobe capital of the Chimu) near Trujillo; the funerary towers at Sillustani, near Puno etc. Not to be missed are the floating islands of the Uros of Lake Titicaca.
The Fortress of Sacsayhuaman, where the Incas performed sacred rites and held festivals, is located at 2 km. Northeast of Cusco.
